I am sure that you have many traditions in your family. I certainly have in mine. More importantly though my wife’s family are all Italian, and ice cream making runs strong within the family. That along with pasta of course. In this article we will be looking at the best ice-cream maker reviews.
I guess just about everyone enjoys the sweet flavour, and smooth texture of home-made ice cream. I know it is a big hit in our house during the warmer months of spring, summer, and even into the Autumn. This ice cold treat is loved by kids and adults alike.
There is however, in my opinion, nothing quite like the taste of home-made ice cream or sorbet. There are several different types of ice cream machines available. You can buy these from numerous retail and online stores. They differ slightly in the method used.
Some will churn out the ice cool treat in continuous batches. There are also smaller units that include removable containers to store the ice cream in the freezer. With such a large selection available, it can be difficult to choose the one that’s right for you.
In my opinion there is nothing quite like the taste of Italian Gelato if it is made properly. To this day all our family enjoy when my wife brings out the ice cream machine and makes homemade ice cream.
So let’s have a look at the top 5 rated ice cream makers currently available in the UK market.
Top 5 Rated Ice Cream Maker Reviews
The most important thing to know about these is that there are two specific types. The cheapest and most popular require you to freeze a bowl in your freezer overnight. If you forget to do that, then you can kiss goodbye to making ice-cream the next day.
The more expensive option is one that does not require you to freeze the bowl.
For a basic ice-cream maker you will pay around £20-25 and for the professional style of machine, expect to pay £150-200. I guess it all depends on how much you are willing to pay or can afford to pay.

It would be hard for me to state that there is a better one out there in the UK market right now. It also costs around £28 so is really good value for money. If you have ever tried to make ice-cream by hand you know that it is not easy, and it can take quite a lot of time.

No 2 – Cuisinart ICE30 ice cream maker
Now the Cuisinart ICE30 gets higher reviews by Amazon buyers of 4.6 out of 5 stars, but it is more than three times the price of the best selling model shown above. For most people the one from Andrew James will do their job nicely.
However if you want to make a lot of ice-cream, then this one has a full 2 litre capacity, and can produce either ice cream, sorbet or frozen yoghurt in 20-25 minutes. It is also fully automatic, so you can put the ingredients in and then go and do something else, while this machine does the hard work for you.
It does not get much easier than turning a dial on and filling the bowl with the ingredients. This product is really simple to use. The only thing you really need to remember is to put the 2 litre freezer bowl into your freezer the night before using it.
Set a timer or something like that as this is so easy to forget. The bowl needs to be properly frozen or it won’t work. It is the same with any ice-cream maker.
The next day you then put your ingredients in and turn it on. This one has an open lid so you can add ingredients, while it is in motion. These are things like fresh fruit or chocolate chips.
To clean it just detach the parts quickly like the freezer bowl, mixing arm and the lid and give them a quick wash.
No 3 – Aicok Ice Cream Maker Frozen Yoghurt and Sorbe Machine with Timer Function and Receipe Book
This model is pretty new to the UK market, but is at a great price, and is also getting really excellent reviews. It has an RRP of £70 but You will find this greatly reduced if you shop around.
At the moment over at Amazon, this one is priced a great deal cheaper than that. It has a very useful timer function. That means you can add your ingredients, set the time and then get on with whatever it is you have to do.
This model makes ice cream, sorbet and frozen yoghurt. It takes about 15-20 minutes if you follow the recipe book, that comes with this ice cream machine.
It uses a large 1.5 litre freezing bowl.
At the moment buyers rate this model as 4.9 out of 5 stars, and it will not get any better than that, when it comes to looking at high quality reviews.
No 4 – Best Budget Ice Cream Maker – Zoku Ice Cream Maker
If you enjoy the odd bowl of ice cream and don’t want to spend a fortune, then this Zoku Ice Cream Maker will do the trick for you every single time.
This one comes with an inner bowl which you place into your freezer. When you want to have a bowl, then place it into the outer sleeve, add the mixture and quickly stir.
In about 10 minutes you will have a bowl of rather delicious sherbet, sorbet, frozen yoghurt, gelato or your favourite ice cream to enjoy.
It comes in a variety of colours including the blue that I have pictured above, but also comes in green, orange, purple and red.
This comes with a stainless steel bowl, the sleeve and a spoon. You do need to freeze the inner bowl for at least 12 hours. Then you add a mix and stir and you get soft ice cream. If you prefer a harder ice cream, then pop it back in the freezer for around 20 minutes.
No 5 – Buffalo Ice Cream Maker
This Buffalo ice cream maker is another professional ice cream maker and you need never worry about freezing the bowl (or forgetting to) again. On Amazon we found that this product had 30 reviews and every single one of them was a 5 star review.
You will not be able to find better quality than that anywhere. It will however set you back around £180, so certainly not a cheap option.
This one can make 1.5 litres of ice cream in around 45 minutes so this model is super fast.
There is also an opening if you want to add additional ingredients, like chocolate chips, closer to the end of the process. This one is also simple to use and very easy to clean.
Commercial Ice Cream Maker
If you are in the market for a commercial ice cream maker, then the Musso Lussino 4080 Table Top Piccolo Ice cream Making Machine, is in my opinion, a really good choice. This one can deliver up to 2 litres of ice cream per hour. So although it could be used in the home, the proper use for this is in a small cafe or restaurant.
At £750 it is not a cheap option but this one is high quality. It has a stainless steel casing and comes with an automatic timer to make life that bit easier.
Old Fashioned Ice Cream Making Methods
On many of our trips back to Italy we still visit a few places where the old fashioned methods are still used. In essence that was a wooden mixer that was hand cranked. The ingredients would be mixed together and put inside a large metal cylinder.
The wooden mixer was added and a wooden crank was attached to the top. That was when the work began and boy was that hard work. It would have to be covered in ice and then had salt placed in it. That made the salt and ice slushy. People took turns at turning the crank so the mixers would beat the mixture in the tube. The combination of ice and salt would then slowly freeze the ingredients and make the most delicious ice cream.
After some hours of turning the crank, the cylinder was placed in the freezer so that it would harden more. Thankfully today an electric ice cream machine takes away the hassle and the pain, and yet the ice cream tasted the same. As kids turning the crank was fun, but boy was it a ton of work.
When making home-made ice cream there are a lot of flavours to choose from. That simply adds variety. The secret to great tasting ice-cream is however the texture. Some Ice cream machines put more air into the ice cream, which makes it lighter and smoother.
Others produce soft serve ice cream, which never gets very hard. With some machines you can make ice-cream and sorbet. Sorbet is very popular as well. It is very similar to ice cream but a bit icier and generally packs more noticeable flavour.
This treat is very popular in Italy and other parts of Europe and has also become a favourite in the western countries.
