Best Pizza Stone UK Reviews
Pizza stones are really great for for creating and baking pizzas in the comfort of your own home. However that is not their only purpose. They can also be used for baking breads, baking cookies, biscuits, and other baked goodies for the family.
Most of these will come with some type of stand, known as a rack. This is so as you can lift and be able to move the stone, without burning your fingers. Quite often these stones will also come with a pizza cutter as an added extra. You normally get some type of “extra” to tempt you into buying.
They come in the classic round or circular shape, and are also available in square and rectangular shapes. Many brands offer them in the form of a gift set. The good news is there are plenty of options.
How Much Do Pizza Stones Cost?
The good news is that these are actually not that expensive. Prices do change depending on what brand you opt for, and what style you want. The prices range from as low as £6, and go all the way up to £30, if you want one of very high quality.
Most people though will on average, have to pay around £10, for a pizza stone of good quality.
What Are Pizza Stones Made of?
They are usually made from some type of high impact ceramic. That makes them pretty durable and also has the added advantage of keeping the food hot and fresh for longer. Clearly it is also important that these stones are also resistant to high temperatures.
This specific type of ceramic has been specially treated to make sure it doesn’t crack, when under severe heat.
How To Use a Pizza Stone?
Some of you may know that there are a few different ways of making a pizza. A popular choice is a pizza maker, or if you have the money a pizza oven. These are good methods, but you can also use a pizza stone.
I have included a video below, that shows you how to do that.
These stones are extremely good at evenly distributing the heat across the full size of the stone. That is really important as it ensures that the base of the pizza is crispy. You can place the stone in a normal oven, or something like a barbecue.
If you are using an oven, then always place the stone on the lowest rack position in the oven.
Warning – NEVER PLACE A STONE IN A HOT OVEN INITIALLY – IT WILL CRACK!!!
Always allow the stone to start off in a cold oven, and then allow it to warm up as the oven heats up. You should always put a lot of olive oil on your stone, as that helps prevent sticking.
It should heat up to 450 degrees, which is the right temperature for making a pizza. Most home ovens can get up to around 475 degrees. For your information, pizza restaurants usually cook their pizzas at around 525-550 degrees.
When the oven is ready, then put your pizza on the stone, and into the oven.
It should be ready in about 10-12 minutes.
Pizza Stones – FAQ
Will Pizza Stones Crack Under a High Heat?
Yes they can do. Now the manufacturers say they will not. However that is only if you exactly follow their instructions for the individual model of pizza stone. Some manufacturers say you must heat the stone slowly in the oven, and they also state that their will be a maximum temperature, that they can be used at.
Always check the instruction booklet, that comes with your preferred stone.
Does food stick to this type of pizza stone?
This can be one of the biggest headaches, especially with the cheaper versions. Most of these are made from ceramic, and many manufacturers do state that they are non-stick. The reality is that food sticks to anything really hot, that has not been treated.
A problem many users had was the pizza crust sticking to the stone. This can be avoided if you carefully oil the stone with lots of olive oil. You can also use corn meal or semolina grains on the pizza stone and paddle, and that helps a lot with sticking.
Are Pizza Stones Hard to clean?
Similar to the answer above, they can be. If food gets stuck to these, it can be really tough to get it off. I would suggest following the steps above to help prevent food from sticking. Always allow the stone to cool. Then wash with warm water only.
Can You Cut Pizzas on a Pizza Stone?
That is a big no. It will over time damage the stone and scratches on the stone will also cause the pizzas to stick even more. These ceramic stones are hard, and they will also damage your pizza cutter, and make it very blunt. You should move the pizza from the stone on to a pizza pan or a plate, and then do your cutting.
