You can buy yoghurt makers in the UK at retail stores such as Argos and John Lewis. You can also buy them online at stores such as Amazon.
Knowing the Average Price of a Yoghurt Maker
Having this information will help you know that you are not over paying for a product. In the UK you should expect to pay anything between £20-30 for a good quality product made by a decent brand.
The average price paid is £25 and in all the information that we have collected, this is what buyers pay for something of good quality.
If you want a high end machine then typical prices there are around £65-80.
What Are Your Buying Options?
If you are reading this article then we understand that you are gathering information so as you can get the best yoghurt maker that suits your needs and the needs of your family. The main reason that people buy these is to have the ability to make their own styles of yoghurt, and also to save money by paying Retail prices for this product.
Most likely you will also want something that has a nice appearance, is attractive to look at, is easy to clean and maintain. Most of these come as yoghurt making kits and that means they will include at least a starter pack, but they will also come with some containers that actually hole your finished product.
You will see below that we point those out in the reviews so as you know that you are getting value for money.
Yoghurt Maker Full Buying Guide
If you are still undecided as to which is the best makerfor your needs, then we would strongly suggest that you read through this extensive buying guide. In this section we have gone into a lot more detail on the exact things you need to fully understand when buying any type of yoghurt maker.
In particular we have been specific about what to look for when it comes to buying the right type of maker and that will depend on your exact needs. We have listed those KEY features just below. Underneath that you will find a summary of what they mean and why they be important to you
Key Important Features of a Yoghurt Maker
- Taste of Yoghurt
- Ease of Use
- Easy to Clean Up Afterwards
- Kits or Machine Only
- Just Yoghurt or More?
As you can see from my list these vary in price from between £20 -£30 at the low to medium price for these, and then £60+ for some other selected brands. Based on the hundreds of reviews that we have read there is really no need to spend any more than £30 for a high quality yoghurt maker.
Taste of the Yoghurt
This is always a much harder one to discuss as people simply have different tastes. When we did our reviews most people, in fact almost all buyers, were happy with the overall taste. Some buyers found certain sachets a little too sweet. In all honesty it is always just a matter of opinion. The only way to find out which brands of yoghurt mix you like is to experiment and find your own favourites.
Ease of use
They are all pretty simple to use and no one should really struggle to use any of the machines on my list. Personally we think the individual jars are handy. Most of the come with seven jars, one for each day of the week, or for 7 different flavours.
That does make it handy for either individual or family use.
Other than that it is a question of how long they take to make the natural yoghurt. Some of them are an over night run, but the general time taken is around 7-9 hours.
Easy to clean
Yoghurt can be messy stuff. Those makers that have jars are the easiest to clean up in my opinion. The smaller jars are dishwasher safe and easy to clean.
Kits or machine only
You can buy just the machine or you can buy machines that also come with jars and a few accessories. It really depends on your own needs. What I have found is that the jars come in very useful for the yoghurt and for other uses as well. The price difference is very little so why not go for a kit style.
JUST YOGHURT OR MORE?
You may have notice that a couple of machines on the list can also make soft cheeses. That is worth thinking about though it does take a bit more work to do that, However if you like soft cheese and you want to make it at home, then a machine like the Lakelane at number 2 on the list would be a better choice.
Now of course you can make yoghurt at home without a maker. I just find that having one of these makes your life a great deal easier. You can still enjoy the benefits of healthy yoghurt without any additives but can also make it quickly and in batches.
Yogurt Starter Cultures
For most of these makers you will need some form of Yogurt starter culture. These are freeze dried sachets which you can use with all yogurt making appliances.
A single sachet contains enough to make 1 litre of plain yogurt These contain live bacteria.
- T use these you boil 1 litre of milk and then cool to 43-44° Celsius
- Add 1 sachet (1gram) of starter culture and mix well
- Allow to stand for 8-12 hours by still keeping the temperature of 43-44 °C (put in thermos or use Yogurt Maker).
- Then cool down the yoghurt in the fridge for few hours.
Which Type of Milk Is Best for a Yoghurt Maker?
Mainly the type of milk used in a yoghurt maker is down to personal taste. Most buyers use a whole milk and some prefer to use UHT milk. It is worth mentioning that some buyers would never use UHT milk. As I mentioned it is always personal preference.
Other people use semi skimmed milk powder with yogurt cultures. You can of course combine any kind of milk soya, almond, coconut, etc)
